  • Resumen del Proyecto

    It has been estimated that 2.5 million tons of pesticides are used worldwide each year and the number is increasing with the passage of time. A late 20th century, sales reached 40 billion dollars annually worldwide, corresponding to 2,800 million kilograms of active ingredients and more than 50,000 commercial formulations. Developing countries use about 40% of this total. More than a thousand formulations or trade names are used worldwide as insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, rodenticides and antimicrobial (WHO/UNEP, 1990; PNUMA/OMS, 1992; OPS, 2002). The word biomarker has been used extensively in the last decade. Exposure biomarkers are used to evaluate the exposure and usually measure a chemical substance or its metabolites in human tissues (eg, urine or blood), whereas the biomarkers of effect are used to assess the level of adverse effects caused by exposure.
